210,824. Hennes, C. Oct. 10, 1922. Treating ores prior to lixiviation; roasting.-A process for the preparation of certain ores for leaching or lixiviation by roasting the ore with oxidizing substances, such as saltpetre, is characterized by the fact that (1) in the case of ores, such as pyrites containing lead, which cake together on being roasted, the oxidizing substance is added to the ore after a preliminary roasting and disintegrating treatment thereof and during subsequent roasting, (2) in the case of ores containing iron pyrites and silver, which easily take up the oxidizing substance, the latter is added to the ore at the commencement of the roasting process, and (3) in the case of complex blende ores, in which the silver is in the form of a metamorphous mixture, the oxidizing substance is added to the ore during the final stage of the roasting. For silver-containing blendes and pure silver ores a muffle is preferably used for the roasting.
